An Incremental MDM Build — Foundational, Enhanced, Integrated

Big-bang MDM stalls. A concentric capability model and a Day 0 → Foundational → Enhanced → Integrated roadmap deliver a golden record in months and value along the way.

Most MDM programs fail the same way: a multi-year, big-bang build that tries to master every domain before delivering any value. The alternative is an incremental, use-case-driven build — a concentric model where each ring depends on the one inside it, and every ring ships value on its own.

The concentric capability model

Picture master data capability as rings, built from the center out. Three tiers group them:

TierCapabilityWhat it delivers
FoundationalCustomer GoldenData inventory, data quality, match & merge, consumption, stewardship — one trusted customer record
FoundationalEnterprise master + external sourcesMost accurate name, address, and contact; a global customer ID (the "platinum record")
EnhancedMulti-model MDMExtend mastering to Account, Product, Location; mint global IDs across domains
EnhancedData products & federated MDMPublish governed data products; define semantic ontologies; domains own their version of truth
IntegratedCustomer Data Platform (CDP)Relationships, household, action history, campaigns, and channel
IntegratedRegulatory reporting & operationsCustomer/account/product master feeding risk rating, transaction monitoring, fraud, remediations
IntegratedAI/ML & advanced analyticsGen AI, segmentation, next-best-action, collections, document processing, journey analytics

You cannot do Customer 360 in a CDP (integrated) without a golden customer record (foundational). The model makes the dependency order explicit: master the core, extend to more domains, then light up advanced consumption.

The roadmap — Day 0 to Integrated

The build unfolds as a timeline, each phase gated by a business sign-off:

PhaseDurationFocus
Day 0≈ 8 weeksCurrent-vs-target assessment, strategy, and design
Foundational6–8 monthsGolden customer record, data quality, stewardship, consumption
EnhancednextMulti-model MDM, data products, federated MDM
IntegratedTBDCDP, regulatory reporting, advanced analytics

Day 0 — assess, design, and strategize

Day 0 is where an incremental program earns its speed. In roughly eight weeks:

  • Current-vs-target assessment — review the existing MDM solution; identify gaps and next steps to mature.
  • Source inventory, analysis & profiling — catalog key systems, core elements, and their metadata.
  • Data platform pilot — pilot tooling to store core elements.
  • Action plan — a roadmap for an incremental, use-case-driven build that integrates with the current state.
  • Modernized MDM strategy — a hybrid, adaptive approach that evolves with the organization, including the MDM style per domain.
  • Implementation strategy — accelerators plus a plan to use generative AI as a co-pilot for data stewardship.
  • Integration framework — an information architecture for seamless integration with downstream systems.

Foundational — the golden record, in production

The foundational phase turns the Day 0 design into a running system:

Source inventory & profiling → Data platform pilot → Core MDM unified match
→ Customer golden pilot → Data quality & stewardship → Benchmarking (match + DQ)
  → Business sign-off → Incremental data load → Report / recon / audit validation
  → Consumers: batch · API · real-time

The output is a governed, benchmarked golden customer record with data-quality controls, stewardship, and three consumption paths (batch, API, real-time) — reconciled and audit-validated.

Enhanced and Integrated — extend and consume

With a trusted core in place, Enhanced extends mastering to more domains and publishes federated data products; Integrated lights up the CDP, regulatory reporting and operations, and AI/ML analytics — each consuming the golden record rather than rebuilding it.

Why incremental wins

  • Faster ROI — each phase addresses a real business use case and ships value.
  • Lower risk — no complete overhaul; the new system integrates with the current state.
  • Federated control — business units keep control of their data while consistency holds across the org.
  • Agility — integrate new data products and programs as they become available.

The path to implement

  1. Run an 8-week Day 0: current-vs-target assessment, source profiling, and an action-plan roadmap.
  2. Deliver the foundational golden record with data quality, stewardship, and batch/API/real-time consumption.
  3. Gate each phase on a business sign-off with recon and audit validation.
  4. Extend to multi-model MDM and publish federated data products per domain.
  5. Light up integrated consumption — CDP, regulatory reporting, and advanced analytics — on top of the golden record.

A rigorous Day 0 is a readiness assessment for master data — ReadinessIQ accelerates it, and the Data Product Factory accelerates the foundational and enhanced build.
